Burned up and Burned out.
Everybody around me is tired. They don’t know what they want to do, they don’t know where they want to go, they just don’t know. It is like their heads just refuse ‘to function’. For myself it seems that I just can’t sleep enough and for some time I didn’t want to see anybody. I just wanted to sit in my room by myself. At a certain point I really started to worry if I didn’t just have a burn-out. More and more young people have a burn-out. Of all the youngsters under 20, 1 in 6 has a burn-out. When I first read this, I didn’t even think “wow, that much!?”, I just thought “Yeah I think that’s about right”. I realized this and it occurred to me that this was a pretty bad thing to think. Why is everybody tired all the time? Why specifically is our generation burned-up? Why are they burned up in what should be most healthy time of their lives?
One of the first things I think has a great influence in our Western society, is that we put everything in service of our mind and spirit, so that we can function best. When a new episode of my series begins at 11 pm, I force myself to not watch it and go to bed instead. Because if I do watch it, I will be tired the next morning and if I’m tired I won’t be able to function and participate in class. The idea of a healthy mind in a healthy body that the Romans had, has been lifted to a whole new level. Everybody is eating healthy food and going to the gym. Everybody is looking for a way to feel more healthy. A lot of people only do this so they can function better with their heads.
Not only do we try to make our body work for our minds, but we use our minds so much. Most jobs are at a desk where you have to stare at a computer and think all day. There is not a lot of physical work anymore. And for all of us young people, we learn all day. When we are not learning, we talk to our friends on WhatsApp and check Instagram or Facebook. Our brains never rest. We are never really bored and always doing something, because if we are feeling bored, we just open Facebook and look at stupid video’s for an hour. So even when we are in place A, our minds are in place B or C. The only moment we can relax our minds, is when we sleep to recharge for another day.
A burn-out is a sickness of the mind. It is like you are just worn out and burned up. You can’t function anymore. It is kind of logical that the numbers of burn-outs are so high among our age-group. We don’t rest, we are never at ease. There is always something happening somewhere around us, and if not, we follow other things from a distance through social media. I’m not saying that we should all start to follow a course of mindfulness and start to hug trees, but it might be good to just do stuff because we want to and not because we want our minds to function tomorrow. Let’s give our minds some rest every day.
Do you agree with me?
