Things I learned in #New Zealand
Kia ora Sanne,
I wanted to write you one last letter from New Zealand before I get on an airplane to Bali tomorrow. I have noticed several times before that going on a long trip like we did learns you stuff. It gives a different perspective, teaches you new things. In Australia I learned to be myself and in Thailand I learned to let go and not always control everything. I want to share with you some of the insights I’ve had on this solo trip through New Zealand.
First of all, peanut butter and bananas. I’ve totally discovered that this trip. I know it sounds kinda gross, but it is soo good!! And actually everybody here is eating it. Every backpacker I’ve met had got a jar of peanut butter (except travelbuddy Gill.. Why Gill?!?) and you can always find bananas everywhere in the hostel. Very important lesson.
Something a bit more serious that I’ve learnt is that sometimes, for some things you just have to pay. I’ve done several things here were just amazing (for example the swimming with dolphins and kayaking). They cost me a lot of money, but I really wanted to do it. So sometimes you just have to go for it! If you really want it, it will probably be an experience worth the money you’ve paid.
Thirdly I’ve made some pretty good friends this trip. Some people I just met for a couple of days, but others were my buddies for longer and I really hope to keep seeing some of these people (yes that’s you again Gill ;))
And last but certainly not least I’ve learned that travelling alone is absolutely amazing!! All the freedom you have and all the people you meet. I was afraid I was going to feel alone, but sometimes I found myself wishing to be alone because there were always people around. Always someone to talk to or somebody who was interested in doing that same hike as I was. I met so many different people and heard a lot of stories.
So yeah, I think I can say that New Zealand was absolutely amazing!! The time I had here will stay with me for a very long time and has showed me yet again how great it is to travel. And now I’m going to Bali to meet you and Veerle. The three of us on the other side of the world, yet another adventure to look forward to. So.. I’ll see you tomorrow!!
